Designing an assessment profile to evidence authentic learning including consideration of the nature of learning, WIL pedagogy, the purpose of assessment, challenges of implementing authentic assessment in the context of curriculum design.

Module description

Assessment and Work-Integrated Learning

(previously known as ‘Learning and assessment in Work-integrated Learning’)

This module explores the design of an assessment profile to evidence authentic learning.  This will include related topics such as consideration of the nature of knowledge and learning, WIL pedagogy, the purpose of assessment, and the challenges of implementing authentic assessment in the context of curriculum design.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the nature of authentic assessments and the challenges of implementing authentic assessment in a contemporary higher education context.
  2. Design an authentic assessment profile that evidences learning outcomes of a WIL curriculum.

More specific topics and outcomes will be available end of July.

Tasks/Activities

The following activities occur during the module:

  • Webinars – at which participants meet and discuss topics & assessment issues and present reflections (The webinars will be held in Weeks 1, 4 and 7).)
  • Read articles and selected readings recommended for the module
  • Identify other readings
  • Written contributions for example in mindmaps, online blogs or postings
  • Other activities as described in module timetable and/or agreed at webinars

Participation time

Expected total participation time approximately 15 – 20 hours – including preparation and participation in online tasks/activities.

Following registration and payment for module, participants will be sent a short questionnaire about suitable times for webinars so that initial webinars planning can be undertaken as soon as possible (hopefully end Sept). The webinars will be in weeks 1, 4 and 7.  The start of each week is shown below (rather than the date of the webinar).

WEEK 4
Week of Nov 7
Challenges of designing and implementing authentic assessment.

Webinar two.

Discussion themes and personal perspectives reflected in the mind map. Introduce 2nd mind map –Assessment in a WIL context.

Participants post a 200-word (maximum) comment related to one of the themes
WEEK 5
Week of Nov 14
Designing an authentic assessment.Participants create 2nd mind map. Contribute to the mind map that collects and collates the different perspectives of participants about the nature and design of authentic assessment.
WEEK 6
Week of Nov 21
Curriculum design: Articulate learning outcomes that inform assessment profiles. Define authentic assessment profiles.Online posting relating to Webinar Two.

Introduce article for reading on curriculum design.
WEEK 7
Week of Nov 28
Designing curriculum and assessment

Webinar three.

Sharing and discussing mind map 2 on ‘Assessment in a WIL context’: What are the key issues in designing and implementing authentic assessment
WEEK 8
Week of Dec 5
Reflection on learnings.
Conclusion of module
Post a 200 word reflection online outlining insights on authentic assessment and WIL curriculum design.

Payment is required by 20 Aug 2022.
The fee depends on you or your institution’s membership.

Payment can be made here using PayPal and your credit card (You don’t need a PayPal account). Let us know if you need an invoice before you can pay.

If you pay and then withdraw before commencing the module you will receive a full refund. No refund is provided if you withdraw after the module commencement date.

3. Learning Management System

About a month before commencement we’ll contact you with the steps required to enrol in the University of Waterloo’s LEARN system which manages the module participation.
You must act on this as soon as you receive the email to ensure you can join the program.

Cost, completion and certificate

  • All modules contain a strong emphasis on application of academic WIL literature to practice.
  • Modules are presented in English through online study – approx 20 hour’s preparation and participation.
  • Administration and set-up charge:
    NZD $200  – Members of the four National Association members
    NZD $225 – Full Institutional Members of WACE and Global Partners of WACE
    NZD $250 – Non-members
    Charge payable on acceptance for a module after registration.

    • A certificate is issued those people who complete the module.
